When I Was On Horseback / The Dying Soldier

from The Merry Month by Jude Norton-Smith

about

Another very traditional one, 'When I Was On Horseback' (Roud 2 ; Laws Q26) is an Irish song detailing a poor young person being carried to their funeral. Cheery stuff. To me this one suits this kind of mid-May 'dip' that we're in right now, a May-day hangover - especially now the sun is being more uncertain again. Also, this is being released on the 15th - and the song has explicit mention of "the 14th of May!" Some things just write themselves...

I first heard the 1971 Steeleye Span version, and it's from that version that I've taken the structure and general melody. However, I'm singing the words first noted as by Mary Doran in 1952.
