about

A bouncing bean to carry us on through this Merry Month. What a topsy turvy May it has been. We've had some beautiful sun alongside quite nasty grey rainy days - but I don't mind the wet too much. It's nice to think everything's having one final nice big drink before a glorious sunny summer! Touch wood...

This tune is another more recently composed 'traditional song,' and the version I'm familiar with is from Martin Carthy's 1979 album 'Because It's There.' He apparently first learnt it from 'a Cynthia Gooding recording which [he] lost' so perhaps the song is from older than we expect!

It's a nice tune, matching that light/dark or sun/rain dynamic that is so important to May with its blossoms and blustering energy. In this song we have well budded sprouts, but also worms eating the flesh of good men. Spicy! I'm a bit shaky in this performance. I was dodging the rain!
