Jack In The Green

from The Merry Month by Jude Norton-Smith

/

about

To inaugurate our Merry Month we have this lovely tune 'Jack In The Green', which celebrates the complex, ambiguous, and (mostly) benign May Day figure of Jack o' the Green. A figure wrapped up in dense folklore including the embodiment of seasonal spirits, 'Green Men', collective local customs and, even, Robin Hood and chimney sweeps, Jack In The Green can be present on May Day as a reminder of the natural world and our connection to it. Additionally, May Day has become a symbolic date for the international workers movement, so hopefully this song of community and celebration and labour can reflect some of that.

This tune, while sounding 'traditional', is actually from the 1970s. Drafted by Martin Graebe of group 'Magpie Lane', it was written in the *style* of a traditional song some liquid inspiration at a local inn of the same name. So, quite traditional after all!

If you do want to give any money, all funds will go towards Outright International's emergency fund for LGBTQI+ people in Ukraine.
